About Us

Chicago Chapter

The National Association of Railway Business Women strives to provide members with activities that promote the rail industry, provide personal and professional growth, serve the community and offer opportunities to network and socialize with other women in the railroad industry.

Supporting Women in Rail

Organized in November 1925, the Chicago chapter of the National Association of Railway Business Women is honored to celebrate a century of empowering women in the rail industry through professional and personal growth, community service, and lasting friendships. For 100 years, we have built a strong network where women support, mentor, and uplift one another — creating opportunities to learn, lead, and give back.

The Chicago chapter meets on the third Saturday of every month from 11 AM to 12:30 PM, offering both virtual and in-person options for members. With an annual membership fee of only $50, members gain access to dynamic guest speakers and discussions on topics that matter to women as well as railroad industry insights, and opportunities for career and personal growth. Our gatherings are more than just meetings, they are spaces for networking, mentorship, and fostering lifelong friendships — where women come together to support, inspire, and strengthen their connections in both their professional and personal lives.

Commitment to Service & Community

At NARBW Chicago, giving back is more than a mission—it’s a century-long tradition that defines who we are. Through volunteer efforts, fundraising, and chapter initiatives, we proudly support organizations that uplift and empower communities, including Ronald McDonald House, La Casa Norte, the American Cancer Society, Sarah’s Circle, the Chicago Foodbank, the Carole Robertson Center for Learning, Feed My Starving Children and many more.

Beyond these partnerships, we are committed to investing in people, which is why we offer scholarship programs at both the National and Chicago chapter levels. By supporting the educational goals of our members and their families, we are helping to build a brighter future — one where women in rail continue to learn, grow, and lead for generations to come.

Building Leadership & Lasting Friendships

We encourage our members to participate in chapter activities, join committees, and support our local and National programs and offerings, including our National Convention held annually. Through these shared experiences, lasting friendships are formed, professional bonds are strengthened, and a supportive network is built. For those looking to gain leadership experience or play a role in shaping our organization, we provide mentorship to help members grow, connect, and step into leadership with confidence. Whether advancing in their careers or simply seeking camaraderie, members of NARBW Chicago find both guidance and genuine friendships that last a lifetime.

Our History

NARBW was founded in 1925 by Hazel Cornell from Minneapolis, Minn., who worked for the Great Northern Railway.  While waiting for a train at Chicago Union Depot, Hazel saw men entering a room and socializing. But there was a sign on the door that said “FOR RAILROAD MEN ONLY.”

This upset Hazel, and she decided to do something about it. Hazel told her railroad friend Sarah about this, and they decided to start an organization for railroad women. In March 1925, the women requested and received a Charter from the State of Minnesota. The second chapter was organized in Chicago in November 1925, and chartered in the State of Illinois on July 31, 1929. The Chicago chapter is excited to celebrate its 100-year anniversary in 2025! NARBW is now comprised of hundreds members in chapters across the country. More history on our organization can be found on the NARBW national website.
