Sharon Slaton

2021 Woman of the Year

Sharon’s career and service reflect a lifelong commitment to safety, leadership, and the empowerment of others—qualities that define the spirit of the National Association of Railway Business Women’s Woman of the Year honor.

During her career at Amtrak, Sharon consistently went far beyond her formal responsibilities. For more than 15 years, she served as an Operation Lifesaver presenter, led employee volunteer initiatives, coordinated weekly health and wellness sessions, and acted as floor warden for emergency preparedness in the Chicago office. Her dedication earned her two of Amtrak’s highest honors—the President’s Service and Safety Awards for Sustained Excellence and for Living Our Values—both received in the same year, a rare achievement that underscores her exceptional service and integrity.

Sharon brought that same energy and commitment to the NARBW Chicago Chapter. As chapter president, she worked tirelessly to strengthen engagement, expand visibility, and create meaningful opportunities for members to connect. Under her leadership, the chapter offered near‑monthly programs ranging from networking events and fundraisers to rail history presentations and Founder’s Day activities. During her term as Chicago Chapter President, Sharon retired early from Amtrak and began contract work with FEMA, where she was deployed to Puerto Rico. Despite long, demanding hours, she organized a fundraiser and donation drive for the island’s homeless community, collecting nearly $1,500 and essential supplies.

When the COVID‑19 pandemic halted in‑person gatherings, Sharon ensured the chapter remained active and connected. She organized a full slate of virtual programs—including sessions on finance, wellness, fashion, makeup, parliamentary procedure, and creative fundraisers—while maintaining regular monthly meetings. Her leadership during this challenging period kept members engaged and supported at a time when connection mattered most. Sharon also championed innovation, collaborating with the Membership Committee to host NARBW’s first‑ever virtual membership drive, as well as launching the chapter’s GroupMe communication channel to reach members who preferred text‑based updates. A lifelong learner, Sharon joined the National Association of Parliamentarians to strengthen her leadership and ensure chapter meetings aligned with NARBW bylaws.

As she completed her term as chapter president, Sharon left the Chicago Chapter stronger, more connected, and more visible than ever.
