Sharon Slaton has a diverse background in communications, emergency preparedness, and public outreach. During her 26-year career with Amtrak, she managed internal and external communications, developed service standards and operating procedures for onboard and train service employees, and prepared communications related to service disruptions across the national rail network. She also served as a Floor Warden, managing the office evacuation team, training employees on emergency procedures, and developing life safety and emergency response materials. Her contributions were recognized with two Amtrak President’s Service and Safety Awards.

 

Following her Amtrak career, Sharon supported FEMA disaster recovery efforts for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, specializing in congressional and operational correspondence, training materials, job aids, and process documentation. She also served as a subject matter expert, training and mentoring team members on complex disaster recovery procedures.

 

A strong believer in volunteerism and community service, Sharon is one of NARBW Chicago’s certified Operation Lifesaver volunteers, continuing her commitment to rail safety education and community outreach. She also served as Chair of her condominium association’s Safety and Security Committee, leading efforts to enhance resident emergency preparedness through updated emergency guides, safety materials, evacuation resources, building signage, and a Safety and Security Awareness Campaign.

 

Sharon joined NARBW in 2015 to connect with other women in the rail industry, support professional development, and participate in meaningful community service. She has served as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Publications Chair, and Scholarship Chair of the Chicago Chapter. She currently serves on the National Board as Publications Chair, overseeing the Capsule newsletter, national website, and social media platforms and coordinating a volunteer committee that supports NARBW’s communications and outreach efforts.
